In 2011, abstract art seems to have died a slow death. Buried beneath figuration, irony, pop, and pastiche. But there is hope. With the exhibition Riposte, the Stedelijk Museum Den Bosch is breathing new life into abstraction. In a playful, almost bold way, four Dutch artists breathe new life into a worn-out visual language. Compositions in color, line, and plane, but with something extra.
A focal point within the exhibition is the work of Evi Vingerling. Her white-colored canvases challenge you to better perceive the phenomenon of light. From the play of light across an angular vase, which the artist herself once saw and depicted in a subtle interplay of lines, to an even more direct representation of it on two washed canvases. Although the two canvases are completely identical, they appear to differ in color because each captures the light slightly differently.
