Contemporary Perspectives – 21st Century | Permanent collection presentation, 2024 onwards
Dordrechts Museum, Dordrecht, NL

Since its founding in 1842, the Dordrechts Museum has been collecting contemporary paintings. Many 21st-century artists are giving a new twist to traditional subjects like portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. They depict social changes and current themes.

The female gaze is gaining prominence, as is cross-pollination between diverse cultures. The use of materials is also changing. Painting is no longer simply paint on canvas or panel. Experiments are being conducted with all sorts of techniques, from photographic manipulation to spatial materials. The interplay of three dimensions brings painting “out of the frame”; closer to the audience. This gallery demonstrates the engagement of visual art with our own time and environment: a world in which different perspectives coexist.
